Normal BMI range for an Adult is 18.5 to 24.9. Before I discuss the detail about the topic let me introduce myself. I am K. J. Islam from Kolkata, India. Now let us first define, what is meant by BMI or Body Mass Index. In a sentence BMI= Weight of the Person in Kilo Gram / Square of the height of the Person in meter.
BMI was previously called the Quetelet Index because it was developed by Adolphe Quetelet during the 19th century. It is a some kind of measure for indicating nutritional status in adult.
For example suppose the the height of a person is 1.75 Meter and his weight is 80Kg. So the BMI will be calculated as BMI= 80/(1.75)x(1.75) which is equal to 26.12. But is it normal BMI? The answer is no
Normal BMI Range
According to World Health Organization the normal BMI of an adult is between 18.5 and 24.9. A person having BMI in the range 25 to 29.9 is a condition called Pre Obesity. In this stage you need to be cautious and reduce weight to maintain a healthy life-style. If you are in this stage there are lot things you can dot reduce weight.

If your BMI is between 30 and 34.9 then you are having Class I Obesity. This requires treatment. You may consult Doctor who specializes in Endocrinologists.
If your calculated BMI is more than 35 and less than or equal 39.9 then you have Class II Obesity. You need to be serious, and urgent medical attention is required.
If your calculated BMI crosses 40, then you have Class III Obesity. This is a very serious situation and you need to take utmost care. A high BMI sometimes could prove to be fatal if proper action is not taken early. But what happens if your calculated BMI is more than normal BMI?
Consequences of High BMI
A high BMI indicates obesity and obesity leads to various diseases. You can call it a source of many diseases including death (mortality). The list is long. It can increase you blood pressure leading to a patient of hypertension. Most of the time the person would have High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides.
It can also lead to Type 2 diabetes, Coronary heart disease, Osteoarthritis , Stroke, Gallbladder disease or breathing problems and it can also extend to cancer. It can also affects your social life having low quality of life and mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, etc.
Is BMI a Perfect Measure of Health Condition?
The answer is no. Like many other measure available, it is not perfect. Still it is used frequently because it is simple and only requires the height and weight. BMI does not include other condition of adiposity based on age, physical activity levels and sex. But why it is so popular. It because it is very popular. It does not require any other tools or parameter other than height and weight.
Is there any alternative to BMI? yes there is. There are other measures, like Waist Circumference which can complement BMI estimates. Association between Waist Circumference and health risks is not an easy task and should be done scientifically using proper techniques.
